Shahdag or Gabala: Which to Choose in Summer and Winter?
Shahdag or Gabala is the question we hear most from guests planning a mountain trip from Baku — in summer just as much as in winter. Both are about three hours from the city and both have a mountain resort with cable cars and an alpine coaster, so on paper they look alike. On the ground they are very different: Shahdag is a high, open mountain resort above Qusar, while Gabala’s Tufandag sits in forested mountains next to a town, with a lake, waterfalls and plenty of other things to do minutes away. Here is how they compare, from the people who drive both roads every week.

Why Most Visitors Choose Gabala
The two resorts themselves are closer than people expect: both have cable cars, an alpine coaster and similar attractions. The real difference is everything around them. At Tufandag you are not limited to the resort — Gabala town, the lake, the waterfall and the amusement park are all 10–20 minutes away, so you don’t lose time on the road and see more, and more varied, places in the same trip. Around Shahdag, the Laza waterfalls are 20–30 minutes away by special off-road vehicle, but the nearest forest worth a walk, Qachresh in Quba, is at least an hour’s drive, and Afurja waterfall about an hour and a half. That is why, in our experience, more guests end up choosing Gabala — especially in summer.
The Road There: Gabala’s Is More Interesting
The drive to Gabala is part of the trip. The road climbs through Shamakhi, the old capital of the Shirvanshahs, with its Juma Mosque and an alpaca farm that children love, then crosses Ismayilli, where you can detour to the copper-craft village of Lahij and the hanging bridge. The last stretch runs through forest, with restaurants set among the trees — a good place to stop for lunch. The road to Shahdag is quicker and simpler: mostly highway along the coast to Quba, then a mountain road up past Qusar. Quba is worth a stop, but there are fewer places to break the journey.
In Summer: Shahdag or Tufandag?
From May to October both resorts run their cable cars for sightseers, and both have an alpine coaster — but the experience is different. At Tufandag you ride down through the trees, with forest all around; at Shahdag you come down an open, treeless mountainside with long views. Shahdag is higher and cooler, its green alpine meadows and bare peaks are the closest thing in Azerbaijan to a Swiss landscape, and the waterfalls of Laza are a 20–30 minute off-road ride away. Gabala is greener and has far more to do outside the resort: Nohur Lake, the Yeddi Gozel waterfall, Gabaland, rafting, forest quad tours, the shooting club and, in June–July, the lavender fields.
Choose Shahdag If…
- You want big, open mountain views. Shahdag’s slopes are high and almost treeless, with wide views of the main Caucasus ridge — the scenery many guests compare to Switzerland.
- You want the biggest ski area and the surest snow. The base is at about 1,435 m, there are around 37 runs on wide, open slopes, and the resort uses snowmaking, so its snow is the most dependable in Azerbaijan from mid-December into March.
- You want to stay in one place and rest. The hotels stand at the foot of the slopes, so once you arrive you hardly need a car. The Laza waterfalls are a 20–30 minute off-road ride away, but for forest walks you need to drive an hour or more to Quba.
Choose Gabala If…
- You want to see the most without losing time. From Tufandag it is about 10 minutes to Gabaland, 15 to Nohur Lake and 20 to the Yeddi Gozel waterfall, so one day can hold the cable car, the lake and the waterfall without long drives in between.
- You want a more interesting road. On the way you pass Shamakhi, its alpaca farm and Ismayilli, with Lahij and the hanging bridge as a detour, and you can stop for lunch at restaurants in the forest.
- You like activity. Besides the resort’s own attractions, Gabala has rafting, quad tours through the forest at the Gabala Adrenalin park and the Gabala Shooting Club, where visitors can try target shooting.
- You are travelling with children — or just love good food. Gabaland, pedal boats on the lake and the cable car make for easy family days, and restaurant service in Gabala is among the best outside Baku.
In Winter: Shahdag or Tufandag?
Skiing is interesting at both resorts — it just feels different. Shahdag is the bigger one: about 37 runs on open, treeless slopes, a higher altitude and snowmaking, so it has more terrain and the most reliable snow. At Tufandag you ski on slopes cut through the forest — a smaller resort with its own atmosphere, and with the town, good restaurants and other things to do minutes away. For a ski week with lots of variety, Shahdag offers more; for a snowy family weekend — the cable car, sledging, maybe a first ski lesson — Tufandag works very well. Both usually open in mid-December, depending on the weather. Our skiing guide compares ski passes and season dates, and where to see snow covers snow days for non-skiers.
Can You Visit Both on One Trip?
Not as a sightseeing day trip. Shahdag is north of Baku and Gabala is north-west, and there is no short mountain road between them — the drive from Gabala to Shahdag goes back through Shamakhi and on via Quba, about 330 km and 5–6 hours. If you want to see both, either visit them on separate days from Baku, or take a direct transfer from your Gabala hotel to your Shahdag hotel and stay a night there. The direct transfer is a fixed price per car: 240 for a sedan, 260 for an SUV and 280 for a minivan. The price includes the drive back to Gabala or Baku on the same day. If you stay longer, the same driver stays and brings you back: each night adds one driver day (65 sedan, 80 SUV, 90 minivan) and the return itself costs nothing extra — for example, a sedan with 2 nights at Shahdag is 240 + 2 × 65 = 370 in total.
Rent a Car or Hire a Driver?
Many visitors first look at renting a car — the advertised daily rates look low. In practice, once you count everything, a car with a driver is usually the better deal for a trip to Shahdag or Gabala:
- You rest instead of driving. A day trip means about six hours on the road. With a driver you rest on the way, watch the mountains and arrive fresh.
- No fines on unfamiliar roads. Azerbaijan has many speed cameras, and limits change quickly between villages. Rental companies charge camera fines to your card — often with their own fee on top, sometimes weeks after you are home. Our drivers know every camera and every turn.
- Mountain roads in winter. The last section up to both resorts can be snowy or icy, and many rental cars come on all-season tires unless you ask. A local driver drives these roads every week.
- One fixed price. With a rental you pay the daily rate plus fuel and insurance, and you often need an international driving permit. Our price is per car with the driver and fuel included, and a same-day trip there and back costs the same as one way. For groups of 4–8 it adds up best: one minivan with a driver costs about the same as renting a minivan and paying for the fuel yourself — sometimes less — and nobody has to drive.
- No deposit, no prepayment. Rental companies also ask for a deposit, blocked on your credit card for the whole rental and released only after the car is returned and checked. With us you leave no deposit and pay nothing in advance — you pay the driver in cash.
In Gabala the sights are spread 4–20 km around town, so the same driver can take you from the cable car to the lake and the waterfall and wait at each stop. For several days around the country, see private driver hire.

Frequently asked questions
Which is better, Shahdag or Gabala?
For most visitors, especially in summer, Gabala: the lake, the waterfall, Gabaland and the town are all 10–20 minutes from Tufandag, so you see more in one trip. Shahdag has the bigger ski area, the most reliable snow and open alpine views.
Shahdag or Tufandag in summer?
Both run their cable cars and an alpine coaster in summer. Tufandag’s coaster goes through the forest and the resort is minutes from Gabala’s other sights; Shahdag is higher, cooler and treeless, with Swiss-style views; the Laza waterfalls are a 20–30 minute off-road ride away, but forests are an hour or more away in Quba.
Which is closer to Baku?
They are about the same: Shahdag is about 200 km and Gabala about 225 km from Baku — roughly three hours by car to either.
Where is the snow better in winter?
At Shahdag. Its slopes are higher and it uses snowmaking, so snow is most reliable from mid-December into March. Tufandag in Gabala is lower, and its snow depends more on how cold the winter is.
Can I visit Shahdag and Gabala on the same day?
Not as a day trip — they are in different directions from Baku with no short road between them. You can, however, transfer directly from Gabala to Shahdag: about 5–6 hours, fixed price from 240 per car.
Which is better with children?
Usually Gabala: Gabaland, pedal boats on Nohur Lake, the cable car and the alpaca farm in Shamakhi on the way. Both resorts have an alpine coaster, and in winter both offer snow fun for non-skiers.
Is it better to rent a car or hire a driver?
For most visitors a driver is the better choice: you rest instead of driving six hours, avoid speed-camera fines and winter mountain roads, and pay one fixed price per car with fuel included — no deposit, no prepayment. For groups of 4–8 it costs about the same as renting a minivan with fuel, sometimes less.
How do I get from Gabala to Shahdag?
By car, via Shamakhi and Quba — about 330 km and 5–6 hours; there is no direct bus. Our private transfer picks you up at your Gabala hotel and drops you at your Shahdag hotel for a fixed price per car: 240 sedan, 260 SUV, 280 minivan.
