Skiing and Winter in Azerbaijan: Shahdag vs Tufandag, 2026/27 Season

Azerbaijan has two proper ski resorts, both about three hours’ drive from Baku: Shahdag, the country’s largest, high in the Greater Caucasus near Qusar, and Tufandag, a smaller resort right on the edge of Gabala town. Ski season usually runs from mid-December into March, and while Baku itself stays mild in winter, the mountains get real snow — which makes Azerbaijan an easy winter trip both for skiers and for families who simply want to see snow. This guide compares the two resorts honestly, explains what to expect from the 2026/27 season, and covers the part most guides skip: getting up the mountain road safely in winter.

When Is Ski Season in Azerbaijan? (2026/27)

Both resorts aim to open in mid-December — last winter, Shahdag and Tufandag both opened their 2025/26 season on 15 December. The exact 2026/27 opening date is normally confirmed in late November or early December and always depends on cold weather and snow, so treat mid-December as the target rather than a promise.

January and February are the most dependable months, with the coldest temperatures and the best snow cover. Shahdag usually keeps skiing into March and sometimes early April thanks to its altitude and snowmaking; Tufandag sits lower, so its season tends to be shorter and more weather-dependent. The busiest periods are the New Year holidays and weekends — if your dates fall around 31 December or early January, book hotels and transfers early.

Shahdag: Azerbaijan’s Biggest Ski Resort

Shahdag Mountain Resort is the one most ski travelers come for. It sits in the Qusar district below Mount Shahdag, with a base at 1,435 m and lifts climbing to roughly 2,500 m. With around 37 runs and 20 lifts — gondolas, chairlifts and beginner carpets — it is comfortably the largest ski area in the country, and snowmaking across the slopes keeps the season more reliable than the weather alone would allow.

Hotels sit right at the base of the slopes, so once you arrive you rarely need a car until you leave. There’s equipment rental and a ski school on site, gentle areas for beginners and children, and enough red and black runs to keep confident skiers busy for several days. It’s the better choice for a proper ski holiday of three days or more.

Ski pass prices change from season to season and between early, peak and spring periods, so check the official site, shahdag.az, before you go rather than relying on last year’s numbers.

Tufandag: Smaller, Next to Gabala, Easy for Families

Tufandag Mountain Resort is in Gabala, about 4 km from the town centre, and its cable cars climb from around 975 m to a viewpoint at 1,920 m. It’s much smaller than Shahdag — about 12 km of runs served by four lifts — but that’s exactly why many families like it: it’s compact, close to Gabala’s hotels and restaurants, and easy to combine with the rest of the area.

When we checked in October 2026, the resort’s own price list showed a one-day adult ski pass at 32 and a two-line cable car ticket at 20 for adults, with lower children’s prices and night skiing listed on Saturdays. New-season prices can differ, so confirm on tufandag.com before you go.

Because the slopes are lower than Shahdag’s, snow cover depends more on how cold the winter is. If skiing is the main goal of your trip, Shahdag is the safer bet; if you want a snowy weekend with skiing as one part of it, Tufandag works very well.

Not a Skier? How to Enjoy the Snow

Plenty of winter visitors — especially families travelling from the Gulf — come to Azerbaijan to see and play in the snow rather than to ski. Both resorts welcome that. The cable cars are open to non-skiers and are the easiest way to reach the snow and the views, and depending on conditions the resorts offer things like sledging, snow tubing and snowmobile rides. For the best places and months, see where to see snow in Azerbaijan.

Dress for real winter: it is usually below freezing at the top of the lifts even when Baku is mild, so pack waterproof boots, gloves, a hat and warm layers for children as well as adults. Many visitors stay in Baku and come up for one or two snow days; others base themselves in a mountain hotel for a few nights.

Getting There in Winter: Roads, Tires and Transfers

Both resorts are reached by good main roads for most of the way, but the final approach is a mountain road, and in winter it can be snowy or icy. If you plan to rent a car, make sure it has proper winter tires — many Baku rental cars run on all-season tires by default, and winter tires often have to be requested separately. Buses run from Baku to Qusar and to Gabala, but with ski bags, children, or a return in the dark after a day on the slopes, they’re hard work.

A private transfer takes the road out of your hands. Our fixed prices for the winter routes, per car:

Route Comfort Sedan (1–3) SUV (up to 4) Minivan (5–8)
Baku → Shahdag 150 170 200
Baku Airport (GYD) → Shahdag 170 200 240
Baku → Gabala (Tufandag) 155 175 200
Baku Airport (GYD) → Gabala (Tufandag) 175 205 240

Prices are per car, not per person. A same-day trip there and back costs the same as one way, so a snow day from Baku costs exactly the price shown. For a stay of several days, choose in the booking form whether the driver stays with you (each night adds a driver day) or you book two separate transfers — the form shows the full total before you send anything. Tell us about skis, snowboards or extra luggage when you book so we send a car with enough room.

Three Easy Winter Plans

  • A snow day from Baku. Leave Baku around 8:00, spend the middle of the day on the slopes or the cable cars, and be back in the city in the evening. Expect about six hours on the road in total, so this suits travelers with limited time — Shahdag and Tufandag both work.
  • A ski holiday at Shahdag. Fly into Baku, transfer straight from the airport to your mountain hotel, ski for three to five days, then transfer back to the airport or to Baku. This is the most relaxed way to do it.
  • A Gabala winter weekend. Two nights in Gabala: one day at Tufandag, and one day for the town and nearby sights such as Nohur Lake and the waterfalls.

Frequently asked questions

Does Azerbaijan have ski resorts?

Yes, two: Shahdag Mountain Resort near Qusar, the largest, and Tufandag Mountain Resort in Gabala. Both are about three hours by car from Baku.

When does the 2026/27 ski season start in Azerbaijan?

Both resorts usually open in mid-December, depending on snow and temperature; last season they opened on 15 December 2025. The exact 2026/27 date is normally announced in late November or early December.

Shahdag or Tufandag — which is better?

Shahdag for a proper ski holiday: more runs, higher altitude and more reliable snow. Tufandag for families, beginners and a ski day combined with sightseeing in Gabala.

Can we visit just to see snow without skiing?

Yes. The cable cars at both resorts are open to non-skiers, and depending on conditions you can try sledging, snow tubing or snowmobile rides.

How do I get from Baku airport to Shahdag?

There is no direct public transport. The simplest option is a private transfer straight from the airport, about 3 hours; ours starts from 170 AZN per car.

Is the road to the ski resorts safe in winter?

The roads are maintained, but the last mountain section can be snowy or icy. If you drive yourself, winter tires are essential; with a transfer, an experienced driver handles it.

Is it worth going from Baku for just one day?

It’s doable: about three hours each way. If you want more than a few hours on the slopes, one or two nights in the mountains are more comfortable.
